Prepare all the ingredients.

Soak the pearl barley in warm water for 1 hour beforehand. Then cook the soaked pearl barley in boiling salted water until done.

Rinse the frozen mushrooms and boil them for 15 minutes as well. Drain the water.

Dice the onion and cut the carrot into strips. Sauté in a frying pan for 5 minutes. Then add 100 ml of water and simmer for another 5 minutes.

Thinly shred the cabbage. Wash the potatoes, peel them, and cut into medium-sized slices.

Transfer the mushrooms, barley, sautéed vegetables, potatoes, and cabbage to a saucepan. Pour in water. Add bay leaf, peppercorns, and season with salt to taste. Bring to a boil, then simmer over low heat until the potatoes and cabbage are cooked.
