Herring under a dome
Description
Perfect for an everyday table. On a New Year's table, this salad will look especially attractive if you decorate it with a mayonnaise lattice, drawing a snowflake or another festive pattern. Buy mayonnaise in a soft pouch and cut off a small part of the corner so the sauce comes out in a thin stream. Decorate as desired and serve.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Prepare the ingredients. Boil the vegetables in advance for 40 minutes and cool them in ice water. Peel off the skin.
- 2
Step 2

Peel the onion, rinse it, and chop finely. Place the chopped onion in a deep container and pour over with water and vinegar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes. During this time, the onion will lose its bitterness and become juicy and slightly sweet in taste.
- 3
Step 3

Grate the boiled vegetables separately on a fine grater into individual containers, rinsing the grater after each vegetable. If the beet is juicy, drain the liquid from the grated mass to prevent the salad from becoming watery!
- 4
Step 4

Add salt and place mayonnaise, mix each mass.
- 5
Step 5

Line a deep, round container with plastic wrap and place the beet layer in it — this will be the top layer.
- 6
Step 6

Place the carrot layer on top of the beet layer. If you are preparing the salad with boiled chicken eggs, place the chopped egg mixture after the carrot layer.
- 7
Step 7

Then add a layer of potatoes. On top of it, place the onion slices drained from the marinade.
- 8
Step 8

Dice the slices of lightly salted herring and place them on top of the onion layer. The herring layer should be the topmost one.
- 9
Step 9

Cover the container with the plate on which you'll serve the salad. Invert it upside down and gently pull the edges of the plastic wrap — the salad dome will easily slide out onto the plate.
- 10
Step 10

Place the dish in the refrigerator for half an hour to marinate, then decorate the salad with a mayonnaise lattice.
- 11
Step 11

Serve the herring under a dome to the table.
