Greek salad with croutons

Description

Minimum effort — excellent result. Sometimes it's not only acceptable but necessary to break culinary rules. Take, for example, the well-known and beloved Greek salad. In Greece itself, it's called "Village Salad," and its authentic composition differs significantly from the version commonly accepted throughout Europe. In the traditional Greek "Village Salad," which you might be served in both upscale restaurants and roadside taverns across the peninsula, you won't find bell peppers—they simply aren't used. Instead of regular onion, shallots are preferred. Salad greens are also rare; Greek cooks are more likely to add a generous amount of local aromatic herbs—always including oregano, as well as basil, thyme, and others. So, throughout its history, the recipe for Greek salad has undergone significant changes! And a handful of croutons certainly won't spoil it. Croutons go wonderfully well with cheese, vegetables, and the fragrant olive oil dressing. Moreover, you can make them not only from white bread but also from rye bread—it will be just as delicious! :) The salad can be served immediately.

Slice the onion into rings or half-rings. If it's too pungent, pour boiling water over it. For salads, it's better to use red onion—it's sweeter and tastier.

Carefully slice the feta—it's very soft and not easy to do, but we can handle it ;)

  7. 7

    Step 7

We will wash the greens, dry them, and chop finely with a sharp knife. If you decide to use lettuce leaves, it's better to tear them by hand.

  8. 8

    Step 8

Squeeze the juice from half a lemon and mix it with the oil, salt, pepper, and oregano.

Place the vegetables, herbs, and cheese into a salad bowl, add pitted olives, pour in the dressing, and gently mix. Top with croutons and serve immediately! :)
