Apples baked with stale bread
Description
Perfect with tea and coffee. In the harsh times of shortage and utter poverty, apples baked with stale bread were one of the few treats available to children and adults alike. You and I never lived through those times, but they did exist. Today I am an adult with a decent income and can afford new cakes, pies, and cookies every day. And yet—every so often I still make this ridiculously simple but surprisingly tasty dessert (if you’ll allow me to call it a dessert). So here is the not-so-secret way to make it :)
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Slice the stale white bread into the thinnest possible slices.
- 2
Step 2

Peel the apples and cut them into thin slices.
- 3
Step 3

Generously grease the baking dish with vegetable oil.
- 4
Step 4

Arrange a layer of bread slices on the baking sheet. Do not overlap them—the slices should sit tightly edge to edge against one another.
- 5
Step 5

Place apple slices on the bread slices, sprinkle the whole thing with sugar on top, and put a small piece of butter on each apple.
- 6
Step 6

Continue stacking the same layers until you run out of ingredients. The top layer should be apples.
- 7
Step 7

The top layer of apples should be arranged overlapping so the apples completely cover everything in the baking dish. Remember to sprinkle the top layer with sugar and dot it with a few pieces of butter.
- 8
Step 8

Bake for about 1 hour at 180 degrees, then remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and serve. It’s incredibly delicious—I know it’s hard to believe, but you just have to try it once :)
