Description

Probably, this dish cannot be called purely Ukrainian, as it is considered traditional among many Slavic peoples, but still, varenyky are loved most of all in this country and are prepared almost every day. I leave the choice of filling up to you, since there are plenty of options, but now I will explain in detail how to make Ukrainian steamed varenyky. In the past, they were cooked over a pot covered with a double layer of cheesecloth on top. This method is certainly proven, but nowadays I prefer using a steamer or a multicooker. With modern appliances, Ukrainian steamed varenyky turn out incredibly delicious at home—be sure to try making them.

Instructions

Then start adding flour to the kefir (in small portions) and knead the dough. As soon as the dough becomes soft, elastic, and stops sticking to your hands, it is ready and no more flour is needed.

    Step 3

    Step 3

Divide the prepared dough into several parts, roll each part into a sausage shape, cut it into pieces, and coat them in flour.

Then roll each piece into a ball and flatten it into a round cake.

By this time, your filling should already be ready. Place it onto the flatbread, bring the edges of the dough together, and shape into a dumpling.

  6. 6

Now we just need to place the dumplings on the steamer racks (you can grease them with vegetable oil) and cook for 7 minutes.

  7. 7

    Step 7

    Step 7

If you are making savory vareniki, you can prepare a sauté—fry diced bacon with onion. While the sauté is still warm, add the cooked vareniki and roll them around to coat evenly on all sides.
