Description

I decided to experiment and make strawberry ground cherry jam at home. Why not? You can make more than just a sweet treat from this berry—you can also use physalis as a main ingredient in salads. I recommend paying attention to this recipe, because it has stood the test of years. The preserve is ready for winter storage.

Instructions

    Step 1

    1. Cape gooseberry (physalis) is a distant relative of eggplants and tomatoes. It is often used for stews and salads, but most of all—homemade strawberry ground cherry jam. Vegetable physalis is very bitter, while the strawberry type has a distinctive, milder flavour.

    2. Place the berries in a bowl and soak them in water. Then sprinkle with sugar and spread it evenly by shaking. Leave the berries for half an hour.

    3. After the berries have rested in the sugar, place the container over low heat and simmer for about 15 minutes. Stir constantly to prevent scorching.

    4. Now you can confidently transfer the jam into jars and store it in the cellar or pantry. You can enjoy this treat in the mornings, use the jam as a cake frosting, or simply add it to cocktails.
