Instructions
- 1
Step 1
Chop the walnuts, but don't overdo it. It's tastier when they are in small pieces, not powdered.
- 2
Step 2
Mix salt, egg, water, and vegetable oil, pour the mixture into a well made in the flour, and knead the dough.
- 3
Step 3
Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rest for an hour.
- 4
Step 4
Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Generously coat them with starch and roll out into thin sheets.
- 5
Step 5
Generously dust each layer with starch again, stack them one on top of another, and roll out as thinly as possible. The starch will prevent the sheets from sticking together. By rolling out all the dough sheets at once, you can make them extremely thin and save time. However, if you're afraid they might stick together and aren't confident in your technique, you can roll each sheet separately.
- 6
Step 6
Cut the resulting thin sheets of dough into the shape of the baking container. We will also need the scraps, so don't rush to crumple them up.
- 7
Step 7
For baking, a rectangular stainless steel pan is ideal. Grease it with refined sunflower oil and line the bottom and sides with scraps of dough. Brush with a layer of melted butter.
- 8
Step 8
Place another 2-3 layers of dough, remembering to spread each with butter.
- 9
Step 9
Place half of the nuts and sprinkle them lightly with sugar. Cover the nut layer with the edges of the leftover pieces from the first layer that are on the sides. Brush with butter.
- 10
Step 10
Place another 5-6 layers of dough. Don't forget to brush each one with melted butter.
- 11
Step 11
Place and spread the remaining nuts, covering them with the remaining dough and scraps, spreading butter between each layer.
- 12
Step 12
Cover the entire product with the last sheet of dough, stretching and distributing it evenly.
- 13
Step 13
Generously brush the surface with butter and cut the product into small equal rectangular pieces.
- 14
Step 14
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and place the baklava inside for 40 minutes, until a golden crust forms.
- 15
Step 15
While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. To do this, mix water, honey, and sugar, bring to a boil, then simmer for another 2-3 minutes.
- 16
Step 16
Pour the hot baklava with syrup, top with chopped pistachios, and let it cool.
