Instructions

Step 1

1. Peel the apples, cut them in half, and remove the cores. Cut each half into 2 pieces. Mix the apples in a bowl with lemon juice and 1/3 cup of sugar. Let stand for 15 minutes.

Step 2

2. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the remaining 1 cup of sugar and whisk the mixture until it turns light caramel in color.
- 3
Step 3

3. Remove from heat, add apples in one layer, then place the remaining slices in a second layer on top, starting from the center.
- 4
Step 4

4. Return the skillet to the stove and cook for 20-25 minutes over medium-high heat. Periodically scoop the caramel with a spoon and pour it over the apples.
- 5
Step 5

5. If it seems to you that the apples in the center are cooking faster than the others, swap their positions. During cooking, the apples will shrink in size, and the second layer may disappear.

Step 6

6. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Roll out the dough into a circle to fit the pan and trim if necessary. Make four holes in the dough. Remove the skillet from the heat and place the dough over the apples. Tuck the edges of the dough underneath the apples. Bake until the dough turns golden brown, about 20 minutes. Serve the tart with whipped cream.
