Lenten bagels
Description
The pastry is simple and quick to prepare. 1. Dissolve the yeast in a couple of spoons of water, add one spoon of sugar and one spoon of flour. Mix until smooth, like a puree. Let it rise for 15–20 minutes. 2. Knead the dough using the risen yeast and all the remaining ingredients. Don't be lazy—knead it well. The dough should be thick! If your flour is weak, you might need an additional 0.5–1 cup to achieve a firm dough. 3. Place the dough into a plastic bag. Do not tie it! Put it on the middle shelf of the refrigerator (not the freezer!) for half an hour. Let it rise and cool down. 4. Shape the ready dough into finger-thick sticks or ropes. Place them onto a greased baking tray. Bake at 180°C (356°F) for 15–20 minutes, until nicely golden brown. Serve warm or cooled. Perfect with tea.
