Smalets

Description

Perfect with meals and drinks. This appetizer is even considered iconic. In many Scandinavian restaurants it is served as an aperitif, before the main meal. It is important to note that you can prepare this smalec to your taste with any herbs, for example, caraway, garlic, dill, etc. It can be served warm or chilled.

   Step 1

   Cut the fatback into small pieces. Finely chop the onion, and grate the apple.

   Place the fatback on a preheated skillet and render over medium heat until golden brown.

   Then add all the remaining ingredients and cook until the fat becomes brown. Remove from the heat and transfer to the prepared jars.
