Step 1

1. First of all, take out the puff pastry and let it thaw if it's frozen. Wash the apples, dry them, and remove the cores and peel. For this sweet puff pastry apple pie recipe, it's best to use firm apples.

Step 2

2. First, transfer them to a bowl and pour lemon juice over them. Gently mix. At the same time, place a high-sided skillet on the heat and heat it thoroughly.

Step 3

3. Place the butter in the pan and let it melt. Then add the apples and cinnamon sugar (if unavailable, regular sugar will work). Cook the apples over low heat for about 5 minutes. Add vanilla, cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg. After 3 minutes, remove the apples from the heat and let them cool.

Step 4

4. Roll out the puff pastry and place the filling in the center. Carefully fold the edges inward to prevent the apples from spreading, then put the preparation into the freezer for 15–20 minutes. This way, the sweet puff pastry pie will keep its shape during baking. Then transfer it onto a baking sheet and brush with beaten egg mixed with milk. Place the baking sheet into the preheated oven.

Step 5

5. The pie bakes quickly; as soon as the top turns golden brown, it can be taken out of the oven. Let the pie cool slightly, then slice and serve. Optionally, it can be sprinkled with powdered sugar or cinnamon on top.
