Marinated Mackerel without Vinegar
Description
Bright and juicy marinated mackerel without vinegar — a wonderful appetizer for festive tables and everyday meals alike. The fish marinates for about 1.5–2 days; the main thing is to wait until it's ready, because you'll want to taste it already during preparation — it looks so tempting! Serve the fish with potato side dishes. It can be served warm or chilled.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Prepare the listed ingredients. Thaw the mackerel if the fish was purchased frozen. Cut off and remove the head, innards, and the dark membrane inside the belly cavity.
- 2
Step 2

Wash the mackerel inside and out under water, then cut into serving-sized pieces. Peel the onion, rinse under water, and slice into half-rings. Place a layer of onion on the bottom of a container or jar. Arrange the cut fish on top of the onion.
- 3
Step 3

Squeeze the juice from the lemon using a citrus press or a regular fork. Remove any lemon seeds if you find them.
- 4
Step 4

Pour salt and black peppercorns into the container.
- 5
Step 5

Pour in odorless vegetable oil and gently mix all the contents of the container with light pressure so the marinade penetrates every piece. Cover the container with a lid and place it in the refrigerator for 1.5–2 days, stirring every 6–8 hours for even marination.

Step 6

After the specified time, you will see white flakes on the fish — this means the protein has denatured, so the slices are fully ready to eat.

Step 7

Place the marinated mackerel on a plate and serve. This appetizer is delicious served with boiled potatoes, french fries, etc.
