Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Prepare the listed ingredients. Buy herring fresh or frozen. If using the latter, thaw the fish before cooking.
- 2
Step 2

Peel the onion, rinse it in water, and slice it into rings. If the vegetable is small, use 2 pieces. Place half of the onion layer on the bottom of the container in which you will marinate the herring.
- 3
Step 3

Gut the herring, remove the black membrane inside the belly, cut off the head, fins, and tail, and rinse the fish. Cut into pieces and place on top of the onion layer.
- 4
Step 4

Season the fish pieces with salt and pepper on both sides, sprinkle black peppercorns.
- 5
Step 5

Place mayonnaise of any fat content and coat the fish pieces with it on all sides.
- 6
Step 6

Place the remaining onion rings on top and, pressing firmly, massage the contents of the container so the sliced onion releases its juice. Cover with plastic wrap, leaving a small opening for air, and refrigerate for at least 24 hours. Stir it several times during this time if possible.

Step 7

After the specified time, taste the appetizer, then place the herring in the marinade directly onto a plate and serve.
