Instructions

Step 1

1. First, clean the herring and remove all bones so you end up with clean fillets. Place a small piece of plastic wrap on the table and lay the two fillet halves on top so they slightly overlap each other.
- 2
Step 2

2. To make the homemade herring roll even, you need to shape the fillet. To do this, cover it with another piece of plastic wrap and lightly pound the fillet with a mallet, removing any thick spots. It is important not to damage the herring, but only to make it even.

Step 3

3. If the herring is lightly salted, you can lightly salt the fillet.
- 4
Step 4

4. Spread cream cheese in a thin layer over the entire surface of the fillet. You can also use grated processed cheese. It can be lightly peppered or seasoned with dried herbs to taste.
- 5
Step 5

5. There are many ways to make a herring roll. In this case, the filling is quite simple — finely chopped herbs and finely diced olives.
- 6
Step 6

6. Using a spare piece of plastic wrap, wrap the roll at the edge, pressing firmly. Then wrap it again in a sheet of plastic wrap so the roll holds its shape well. Refrigerate for 1–1.5 hours, then freeze for another 15–20 minutes before serving.

Step 7

7. Carefully unroll the finished roll and cut into portion-sized pieces.
- 8
Step 8

8. It can be served on a slice of bread that has been lightly toasted in a skillet or in the oven. If desired, rub the bread slices with garlic for aroma.
- 9
Step 9

9. Place the roll on a slice of bread and garnish with herbs, a cherry tomato, or bell pepper, for example. And that's the entire simple herring roll recipe.
