Description

Perfectly pairs with tea and coffee. So, let's see, serve cooled or slightly warm.

Instructions

  1. 1

    Step 1

    Step 1

    1. Prepare the necessary ingredients — and let's get started!

  2. 2

    Step 2

    Step 2

    2. Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Add 1.5 tablespoons of flour, mix and let the starter rest in a warm place for 15 minutes.

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Step 3

    3. When the sponge has risen to form a "cap," it means it's ready.

  4. 4

    Step 4

    Step 4

    4. Add salt and vegetable oil to the starter, mix well.

  5. 5

    Step 5

    Step 5

    5. Pour the sponge into the sifted flour and knead the dough.

  6. 6

    Step 6

    Step 6

    6. The dough should not be too stiff. Gather it into a ball.

  7. 7

    Step 7

    Step 7

    7. Cut off 1/4 of the white dough and mix in tomato paste (add 3 tablespoons of flour to knead into a smooth ball). Place both portions of dough into separate bowls, cover with towels, and set in a warm place for 1 hour.

  8. 8

    Step 8

    Step 8

    8. The dough should double in size within an hour.

  9. 9

    Step 9

    Step 9

    9. Cut off 1/3 of the white dough, and divide the remaining dough into 8 pieces. Do the same with the red dough.

  10. 10

    Step 10

    Step 10

    10. Roll small pieces of dough into ropes of equal length. Leave the larger pieces aside for now, covering them with plastic wrap to prevent drying.

  11. 11

    Step 11

    Step 11

    11. Roll out the tomato-colored rope into a rectangle with a rolling pin, place the white rope on top, and wrap it in the red dough. Pinch the edges together.

  12. 12

    Step 12

    Step 12

    12. You should end up with these little "pupae." Turn them seam-side down. Repeat this with all the strips.

  13. 13

    Step 13

    Step 13

    13. Roll out the reserved red dough into a flat layer. Place the "dolls" on top and wrap them in the dough. You can shape the bread into 4 dolls in a row, or arrange them as 3-2-3 dolls. In the latter case, baking should be done only in a tall pan.

  14. 14

    Step 14

    Step 14

    14. Turn the bread upside down with the seam facing down.

  15. 15

    Step 15

    Step 15

    15. Now roll out the white dough into a sheet. Wrap the bread in it, pinching the edges together.

  16. 16

    Step 16

    Step 16

    16. Ready!

  17. 17

    Step 17

    Step 17

    17. Grease the baking pan with oil or line it with foil if you're unsure about your pan. Place the loaf seam-side down, brush with egg yolk, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and let it rise in a warm oven for about 20 minutes (if using dry yeast, double the proofing time). Then bake at 180°C for approximately 1 hour.

  18. 18

    Step 18

    Step 18

    18. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan. Done! Slice it — and serve!
