Prepare all the ingredients.

Separate the basil leaves from the stems. For pesto, use only whole, unblemished leaves.

Coarsely chop the cashews so they can be easily ground later. Peel the garlic clove.

Transfer the basil, cashews, and garlic to a container for blending. Add lemon juice, olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Blend until smooth.

Taste the pesto and, if necessary, add more salt or olive oil if a thinner consistency is desired.
