Cookies
Description
The baking is simple and quick. If you shape the snakes into rings, you can thread fishing line or golden thread through a couple of rings and hang the cookies on the Christmas tree, on a Christmas stocking with a gift, and so on. Shortbread snakes look very festive in a gift box. If you like, you can add various flavorings and food colorings to the dough.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Prepare the listed ingredients. Use good-quality butter; you may substitute good margarine, but not spread.
- 2
Step 2

Cookie dough comes together very quickly! Put two egg yolks in a deep bowl and add the salt and sugar to the same bowl, then add soft butter. Rub everything thoroughly with a fork until the sugar dissolves.
- 3
Step 3

Then add the flour and rub everything together with a fork. Do not add baking powder under any circumstances! At first the mixture will be thick, but over time the sugar will start to melt and mixing will become easier.
- 4
Step 4

The mixture will then break apart into lumps — don't worry, this is normal for shortcrust dough.
- 5
Step 5

Next, shape it into a ball with your hands — the dough is pliable and easy to work with. The main thing is not to add too much flour. At this stage, place it in the refrigerator for 20 minutes to chill.
- 6
Step 6

Then divide into equal small balls. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
- 7
Step 7

Then roll each one into a rope between your palms and flatten one end to form the head. Make the other end thin—that will be the tail. Arrange the snake in a spiral or as a ring—follow your culinary imagination. There is no need to grease the baking sheet; the dough already contains fat.
- 8
Step 8

Bake the cookies for 5–10 minutes, depending on your appliance’s power. Remove the baking sheet and let the baked goods cool.
- 9
Step 9

Arrange the shortbread snakes on plates or boards and dust with powdered sugar. The New Year’s dessert is ready — you can serve it at the table. Enjoy your meal!
