Classic shepherd's pie
Description
The dish is prepared without unnecessary complications. Shepherd's pie is a classic British dish, whose recipe originates from distant Scotland or northern England. Originally, it was made from leftover meat scraps and remnants of roast. Lamb, stewed with onions, carrots, and peas, was most commonly used as the meat. I offer you an excellent version. The finished dish can be served immediately.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Peel the potatoes. Cover the potatoes with water. When it comes to a boil, add salt to the water. Cook until done.
- 2
Step 2

Peel the carrots and grate them on a coarse grater.
- 3
Step 3

Cut the onion into small cubes. You can use a chopper or blender to mince the onion.
- 4
Step 4

Sauté the onion in vegetable oil, then add the carrot and simmer together for 10 minutes.
- 5
Step 5

Add the ground meat. Mix the meat with the vegetables and simmer until cooked. It will be easier if you pour a glass of water into the pan right away while simmering. This way the meat will slightly separate, cook faster, and become more tender.
- 6
Step 6

Add tomato paste, salt, spices, and adjust to taste.
- 7
Step 7

Place the meat filling into the baking dish. Spread it evenly.
- 8
Step 8

Boil the potatoes until fully cooked. Drain the water. Mash the potatoes into a puree. Add 1 egg, spices, and a little milk. Beat until a smooth and fluffy puree forms. Spread the mashed potatoes over the layer of meat. Smooth it out.
- 9
Step 9

Use a tablespoon to create a relief pattern on the layer of potatoes.
- 10
Step 10

Grate the hard cheese on a coarse grater. Sprinkle the layer of potatoes with the grated cheese.
- 11
Step 11

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Bake the shepherd's pie in the oven for 40 minutes.
