Nut Baklava

Description

The pastry is simple and quick to prepare. Baklava is made with very thin dough soaked in sugar syrup. Filo or puff pastry dough is used. Essentially, it's a layered cake cut into pieces, usually triangles or rectangles. Nuts are commonly added, but it can also be made without them. The hardest part is waiting for the baklava to cool completely before enjoying each piece.

    1. Open the dough package, roll out each sheet and cover all of them with a towel to prevent the dough from drying out. Melt the butter, grease the baking pan with it, place 2 sheets of dough at the bottom, brush with melted butter, sprinkle lightly with cinnamon and crushed nuts, then cover with another layer of dough. Repeat the process until you run out of dough.

    2. Do not sprinkle the top 8 layers with nuts. Cut the cake into small rectangles so that the syrup can thoroughly soak through to the bottom. Place the pan in a preheated oven at 180 degrees for 1 hour.

    3. Meanwhile, prepare the syrup: in a saucepan, combine water, honey, sugar, and vanilla. Place over heat and cook until the granules dissolve and a thick, viscous syrup forms. The syrup should be hot, so don't rush to make it too early.

    4. Pour the hot syrup over the baklava, let it sit for at least 1 hour (for the baklava to cool down), or preferably for 1-2 days. Serve the finished pastry cooled.
