Filopaper baklava
Description
Perfectly pairs with tea and coffee. Baklava (also known as baklawa, though you might come across this name as well) is a pastry made from phyllo dough, soaked in a sweet syrup made from sugar or honey. Thanks to the use of this dough, the dessert has a distinct, visible texture. Baklava is made with various nuts—walnuts, almonds, and others, whatever is available.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1
Pour half of the water into a saucepan and add half of the sugar. Place the saucepan over heat and cook until the mixture turns caramel-colored (about 20 minutes), without stirring.
- 2
Step 2
After the caramel appears, add the remaining sugar and water, cook over medium heat until golden color forms (5 minutes). Remove the syrup from the heat and let it cool.
- 3
Step 3
Preheat the oven to 150 degrees. Cut the filo pastry sheets in half, then trim them to fit the size of the baking tray or dish you will be using.
- 4
Step 4
Melt the butter, then grease the baking dish with it. Layer the sheets one on top of the other, generously brushing each with melted butter.
- 5
Step 5
Conditionally divide the sheets into 3 parts. Sprinkle each third with a layer of crushed walnuts. Spread the remaining butter over the top layer.
- 6
Step 6
Cut the sheets into the desired shape, then place in the oven and bake for 55-60 minutes.
- 7
Step 7
Pour the baked baklava with the previously prepared syrup and return it to the oven for another 5 minutes.
- 8
Step 8
Leave the baklava to soak for 8–10 hours, then serve.
