Oat kvass with basil
Description
The recipe won't take much time. Ingredient quantities are calculated for a 1-liter container. Tasty, refreshing, chilled sparkling kvass—the best drink after a long workday or at lunch during exhausting heat. If you have a large family, prepare more of this drink so there's enough for everyone.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Prepare the listed ingredients. You can use either rolled oats, quick-cooking oats, or plain oats.
- 2
Step 2

Add the flakes or oats to a jar or another spacious container. Rinse the basil stems and add them there as well.
- 3
Step 3

Pour in hot boiled water, add granulated sugar, stir, and let cool to room temperature.
- 4
Step 4

When the liquid cools to 30-35 degrees, add the dry yeast and stir. Do not add them to hot water, as it will completely stop their activity.
- 5
Step 5

Cover the container opening with a towel or gauze and leave it at room temperature for 2-3 hours. During this time, the yeast will activate and begin releasing carbon dioxide.
- 6
Step 6

After that, strain all the contents of the container through a fine sieve or a double layer of cheesecloth. Pour into a bottle, seal with a lid, and place in the refrigerator for 24 hours. The kvass tastes best after a day, as the yeast will consume the sweetness and give the drink a slight tang.

Step 7

Pour the chilled kvass into glasses or cups and serve. It is especially delicious in the summertime!
