Oat jelly
Description
The drink is quick and easy to prepare. Monastery-style oat kissel can be made using a longer method with soaking the grains for 24 hours, but it can also be prepared as described in this recipe. The recipe is simple and clearly explained in step-by-step instructions. Using the same recipe, you can also make a non-fasting (rich) version of kissel. To do so, replace the water with milk and add cream or butter. The kissel can also be unsweetened—instead of jam or honey, add sautéed onions. Serve as desired.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Prepare the ingredients.
- 2
Step 2

Soak the "Hercules" oats in cold water and leave for a day until they slightly sour. Alternatively, for a quicker method, soak for 3 hours and then add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice.
- 3
Step 3

Strain the mixture through a sieve. The grain can later be used for baking bread, soaked for making kissel, or used for other purposes.
- 4
Step 4

Pour the strained portion into a saucepan, heat to boiling, add salt, sugar (or honey), and pour in 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Boil for about 1 minute after boiling begins, until slightly thickened.
- 5
Step 5

While the kissel is heating, prepare the dish and grease it with vegetable oil.
- 6
Step 6

Once the kissel thickens, remove it from the heat and pour into prepared dishes. Serve cold. As an addition, you can include jam, preserves, fresh berries, or fruits. In this recipe, wild berry jam was added. The result is a tasty, healthy, and low-calorie dish.
