
Nian Gao
Description
An easy recipe for preparing a popular Chinese dish. Nian gao is rice cakes stir-fried together with pork and mushrooms.

Soak the rice cakes in water for 2 hours (preferably leave them overnight).

Prepare the Chinese mushrooms (shiitake) and canned bamboo shoots (drain the liquid from the can beforehand).

Finely chop the Napa cabbage.

Marinate the pork in a mixture of soy sauce, rice wine, cornstarch, and a pinch of sugar. Place the meat onto a heated skillet greased with vegetable oil.

Sear the pork until almost cooked through.

Then add the Chinese mushrooms.

Also add bamboo shoots.

... and Napa cabbage.

Mix thoroughly.

Season with soy sauce - to taste.

Place the rice cakes in the frying pan.

Mix or toss gently a few times - carefully :)

Pour 1/4 cup of chicken or vegetable broth into the skillet, cover with a lid, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 2-3 minutes, until the rice cakes soften.

Arrange the nian gao beautifully on a dish and serve.
