First, knead the dough. Mix dry yeast, warm water, sugar, and flour. Add salt. Let the dough rest for about an hour.

Step 2

By the time the dough has almost finished resting, prepare the sweet syrup. Pour one cup of water (rose water), honey, and the juice of one whole lemon into a saucepan. Warm the syrup slightly until all ingredients are well mixed. Cover with a lid and turn off the heat.

Step 3

Take a small but deep pot. Pour in one cup of vegetable oil first. Heat it up. Tear off pieces from the dough, shape them into balls, and drop them into the boiling oil. This will be similar to deep frying. Remove the luqudames with a ladle and place them on a paper towel to let the excess oil drain off. Periodically add more vegetable oil to the pot as needed.

Step 4

Before serving, pour sweet syrup over the loukoumades. You can skewer the loukoumades on sticks, but more often they are eaten with dessert forks.
