Step 1

1. In a small bowl, mix all the ingredients for the yeast. Cover and let stand for 10 to 15 minutes. Combine the yeast mixture, sour cream, butter, 1 egg, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract in the bowl of a mixer; mix using the paddle attachment. Add the flour and mix with the dough hook for about 5 to 6 minutes. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise for 60–90 minutes, or until doubled in volume.

Step 2

2. While the dough is rising, prepare the filling by mixing all ingredients (except the lemon cream) in a small bowl.

Step 3

3. Roll out the dough into a 25x37 cm rectangle on a floured surface.

Step 4

4. Place the rectangle onto a large sheet of parchment paper. Mentally divide the rectangle into 3 equal long strips and spread the cream filling over the central strip. Then spread lemon cream on top.

Step 5

5. Using a knife, cut across strips 1 cm thick, without touching the filling. Make sure you have an equal number of strips on the right and left sides.

Step 6

6. Braid the strips into a "braid" shape. Place the bread on parchment paper on a baking sheet. Loosely cover with plastic wrap and let rise for 45 to 50 minutes.

Step 7

7. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees. Brush the bread with the remaining beaten egg and sprinkle with pearl sugar. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until the bread turns golden.

Step 8

8. Then remove from the oven and let cool for 15–20 minutes before serving. Slice and serve.
