Cottage Pie
Description
The pastry is made simply and quickly. English cuisine is often called very primitive and plain, but cottage pie—perhaps the most primitive dish in English cuisine—is prepared incredibly simply, with no fancy touches, from the most ordinary ingredients. The pie turns out very filling—no wonder it’s called “cottage” :) I should say the dish is quite tasty and deserves attention. Good luck with your cooking
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

We check whether we have every ingredient at hand—though if something is missing it’s fine; the dish allows small tweaks.
- 2
Step 2

Boil the potatoes as for mashed potatoes: cut into medium-sized chunks and simmer in salted water until tender.
- 3
Step 3

Finely chop the onion and carrot.
- 4
Step 4

Dice the mushrooms into small pieces and grate the cheese on a coarse grater.
- 5
Step 5

Finely chopped onion, carrot, and garlic are sautéed in vegetable oil for a couple of minutes (until the onion is translucent).
- 6
Step 6

Add the mushrooms to the vegetables, stir, and simmer over medium heat for about 5 minutes more.
- 7
Step 7

Meanwhile, make plain mashed potatoes from the potatoes.
- 8
Step 8

Add the ground meat to the vegetables and mushrooms, stir, and sauté for another 5 minutes or so.
- 9
Step 9

Add half of our grated cheese to the mashed potatoes.
- 10
Step 10

Toast the flour for about a minute in a dry skillet.
- 11
Step 11

Then add to the flour what we fried in the other pan—the minced meat, mushrooms, and vegetables. Cover with a lid and simmer for 4–5 minutes.
- 12
Step 12

Take a baking tin and spread the filling of mushrooms, vegetables, and minced meat on the bottom.
- 13
Step 13

For the second layer, spread our mashed potatoes.
- 14
Step 14

Finally, the third layer is the grated cheese layer.
- 15
Step 15

Bake for 15–20 minutes at 150°C (until the cheese is golden brown). Cottage pie is done!
- 16
Step 16

Let cool slightly and serve. Enjoy your meal!
