Potato casserole with meat and cheese
Description
The dish is simple and quick to prepare. Potato casserole with cheese and minced meat is a hearty, comforting meal perfect for a family lunch or dinner. Tender potato slices soak up a creamy broth mixture, while the juicy meat filling with onions and spices adds rich flavor, and the grated cheese forms a golden, gooey crust. The casserole turns out soft inside, aromatic, and wonderfully homely—ideal for preparing ahead and serving straight from the baking dish. Serve it cooled down or slightly warm.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Prepare the ingredients for making the casserole. Use any ground meat you prefer: pork, beef, chicken, or turkey. Use 10% or 20% cream.
- 2
Step 2

Peel and finely dice the onion.
- 3
Step 3

In a saucepan, melt a mixture of 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil, then add the prepared onion. Sauté until translucent and soft, stirring occasionally.
- 4
Step 4

Add the minced meat to the sautéed onions, fry while stirring and breaking up the lumps with a wooden spatula. Add salt and spices to taste.
- 5
Step 5

Add the flour and mix.
- 6
Step 6

Pour the broth in a thin stream. Mix the mixture thoroughly, making sure no lumps of unincorporated flour remain. Then pour in the cream.
- 7
Step 7

Bring the mixture to a boil over low heat and add half of the grated cheese. Stir it in and remove the pan from the heat.
- 8
Step 8

Peel the potatoes and cut them into julienne strips. This can be done using a knife or a grater. Rinse the potato strips in cold water and dry them.
- 9
Step 9

Mix the cheese mixture well and combine with the potato straws.
- 10
Step 10

Place the potato-cheese mixture into a buttered baking dish and spread it evenly throughout. Cover the dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 40–45 minutes. Five minutes before the end of cooking, remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining grated cheese over the surface of the casserole, and continue baking until a golden crust forms.
- 11
Step 11

Serve the casserole cut into portions with fresh vegetables and herbs. It's convenient to cut the casserole into portions once it has cooled slightly.
- 12
Step 12

The pastry is ready. Serve with tea.
