Calzone with Ham

Description

Home baking for tea. Instead of tomatoes, you can brush the surface of the rolled-out dough with your favourite ketchup. You can also add chopped fresh herbs to the main ingredients if you like. Serve warm or chilled. Perfect with tea.

    Prepare all ingredients in advance.

    In a bowl, rub the yeast with your fingers, add the sugar and warm water. Whisk all these ingredients together until completely dissolved.

    Add 2 tablespoons of flour to the yeast mixture. Whisk and leave the bowl with this mixture undisturbed for 15–20 minutes.

    After 15–20 minutes the yeast will activate, and you will get a foamy mixture.

    Then sift all the flour into the yeast mixture, add salt and vegetable oil.

    Knead a soft dough that does not stick to your hands, and let it rest for half an hour undisturbed.

    Then divide all the dough into two equal parts. Roll one portion of the dough out thinly with a rolling pin into a circle (mine is 26 cm in diameter).

    Wash the tomato, pat dry with a kitchen towel, and slice into thin half-moons. Arrange some of the tomato half-moons on half of the rolled-out dough.

    Cut the ham into small cubes or sticks and spread half of it over the tomatoes.

    Grate the cheese on the coarse side of a grater and spread half of it over the ham.

    Use the free part of the rolled-out dough to cover the part of the dough that has the filling. Seal the edges with your fingers or a fork. Do exactly the same with the remaining dough and filling.

    Place two ham calzone pieces on a baking sheet lined with baking parchment, cut a few slits in each to let steam escape, brush the tops with beaten egg, and bake in an oven preheated to 180°C for 20–25 minutes.

    It is best to serve the finished calzone hot.

    Remove from the oven and serve warm or cooled.
