
Italian sugar cookies
Description
It goes perfectly with tea and coffee. These tasty cookies are great to pack for school for the kids, to take on a trip, or to a picnic. They’re ideal not only for an afternoon snack, but also for breakfast with a cup of hot coffee or tea. You can add ground cinnamon to the topping if you like its aroma.

Prepare the indicated ingredients. Butter may be substituted with quality margarine.

Melt the butter in a double boiler or in the microwave, but do not bring it to a boil. Cool slightly, then pour in sparkling mineral water, add salt and granulated sugar. You may substitute light beer for the mineral water. Whisk thoroughly.

Add the baking powder and wheat flour; knead a firm but not overly stiff dough.

Cover it with plastic wrap and let it stand for 10 minutes.

Sprinkle some sugar onto a plate. You can mix the sugar with ground cinnamon or use brown sugar instead. Dust your work surface with flour, divide the dough into equal pieces, and roll each into a short rope. Join the ends of the ropes, then dip the rings into the sugar on one side.

Line the baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the rings. Preheat the oven to 180°C and place the baking sheet on the top rack.

Bake for about 20–25 minutes until golden brown, then take the baking sheet out of the oven. Let the bake cool.

Serve sugar cookies at the table with tea, coffee, lemonade, or warm milk.
