Description

Delicious baked treat for the whole family. In traditional Tatar cuisine, there are many different ways to prepare "khvorost" (fried pastry), each varying in recipe, shape, and taste, with its own special name. The Tatar-style khvorost recipe I want to share is the simplest one, and its name translates as "bird tongues," probably due to its shape and crumbly texture. This khvorost turns out very crispy and incredibly tasty—children absolutely love it, and adults won't resist crunching on it with a cup of tea or coffee. To make this treat, all you need to do is follow this simple Tatar-style khvorost recipe, and half the work is already done. Serve it cooled down or slightly warm.

Instructions

  1. 1

    Step 1

    Step 1

Break the eggs into a deep bowl, add sugar, salt, and milk, and mix until the granules dissolve completely. Gradually start adding flour and knead the dough until it becomes quite firm, dense, and elastic. Cover the finished dough with a cloth or towel and let it rest in a warm place for half an hour. Then divide it into several portions (this makes it easier to work with), and roll each portion into a thin sheet about 1.5–2 mm thick.

  2. 2

    Step 2

    Step 2

Cut the sheet into diamonds with sides of 3.5-4 centimeters using a decorative knife.

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Step 3

Pour vegetable oil (about 2-3 cups) into a saucepan and place over heat. When the oil begins to boil, put in the diamond-shaped pieces of dough. The oil should completely cover them.

  4. 4

    Step 4

    Step 4

When the diamonds turn golden, place them on paper towels to remove excess oil.

  5. 5

    Step 5

    Step 5

Then transfer to a plate and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Now we can finally proceed to tea time. Enjoy your meal, everyone!
