Gunkan
Description
Perfect for the table and for drinks. To treat yourself to a dish of Eastern cuisine, you don't necessarily have to go to a Japanese restaurant — make colorful gunkan maki in your own kitchen and arrange a romantic tête-à-tête for your significant other. Don't forget to serve drinks and sauces, but be careful with the wasabi. Serve the appetizer at the table.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Prepare the specified ingredients.

Step 2

Rinse the rice thoroughly in water several times. Pour it into a kazan or pot and cover with hot water; add salt. Boil for 15 minutes and drain the water. In a separate container, mix sugar with apple cider vinegar and pour the liquid over the rice; mix thoroughly, cover the container with a lid, and leave for 10–15 minutes to steam. Then let cool.

Step 3

Wet your hands in water, pinch off a portion of the rice, and shape it into a ball in your palms. Prepare several more portions the same way.
- 4
Step 4

Cut the nori sheets into 3–4 pieces, depending on the height of the gunkan you are making.
- 5
Step 5

Gently flatten the rice ball and place it on the edge of the nori sheet. Wrap the seaweed around the rice filling. You should get oval boats. Trim the nori if the edge is uneven.

Step 6

Place the processed cheese, a slice of avocado, and red caviar in the boat, filling it to the top. If desired, you can make gunkan with different fillings: slices of lightly salted red fish or other fish, vegetable slices, and so on.

Step 7

Serve the gunkan with wasabi, soy sauce, pickled ginger, etc.
