French Toast
Description
French toast made from this recipe is a dish that knights may have actually eaten at some point. The first mention of French toast with this name dates back to the Middle Ages; in Germany, “poor knights” have been known since the fourteenth century. The concept of the dish is simple and at the same time brilliant. Stale bread was softened in milk with egg, and then fried in boiling fat. In the Middle Ages they literally wrote “fat,” but nowadays butter or any vegetable oil is naturally preferred. “Poor Knight” is served with sugar and cinnamon, topped with honey, maple syrup, or any jam. The appetizer is ready. Serve immediately.
