In the oil remaining from frying the liver, sauté the onion to your preferred level of doneness.

Add the mushrooms and sauté them. You can cook until lightly browned, or just until the liquid evaporates—this is a matter of personal preference. Add sour cream and a little water, season to taste with salt, and let the sauce simmer for about 3 minutes.

Place half of the onion-mushroom sauce on the bottom of the baking dish.
