Hungarian-style stuffed cabbage rolls
Description
For baking cabbage rolls, choose a ceramic casserole dish or a baking pan with sides. Since ovens vary, adjust the baking temperature individually between 175 and 180 degrees. Ready cabbage rolls are easily pierced with a knife. The cabbage leaf should be very soft but not falling apart. For the sauce, choose sauerkraut with moderate acidity; otherwise, the dish will take longer to bake.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Prepare the necessary ingredients.

Rinse the rice in cold water. Pour water over it and boil until half-cooked, after bringing to a boil.
- 3
Step 3

Drain the water from the partially cooked rice, rinse once more. Set aside to cool.
- 4
Step 4

Separate the cabbage leaves. To do this, make cuts at the place where the core is and carefully remove each leaf.

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Place two leaves in it, and after the water comes to a boil again, cook for 5 minutes.

Step 6

Pour cold water into a large bowl. Place the cabbage leaves into it after 5 minutes of boiling.
- 7
Step 7

Sauté the diced onion and minced garlic in vegetable oil until soft.
- 8
Step 8

Prepare the stuffing. Grind beef and pork through a meat grinder using a medium plate. Mix the minced meat in a bowl with rice, sautéed onion and garlic, egg, salt, paprika, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly.
- 9
Step 9

Take a cabbage leaf out of the bowl with water. Shake off excess water. Trim the tough part. Place 1-1.5 tablespoons of filling onto the cabbage leaf. Fold in the sides and roll up.
- 10
Step 10

In a bowl, dilute the tomato paste with water.
- 11
Step 11

Place the sauerkraut into a deep, spacious ceramic pot or a baking dish with sides. Pour in half of the diluted tomato paste.

Step 12

Place the prepared cabbage rolls. Pour the remaining diluted tomato paste over the top.

- 14
Step 14

Serve the ready cabbage rolls immediately at the table.
- 15
Step 15

The dish is served together with the sauerkraut in which the cabbage rolls were baked. Sour cream is served additionally.
