French Toast with Rum
Description
A delicious appetizer for any gathering. I don't know whether croutons are actually made this way in France (as far as I know, they're generally called croutons there), but a recipe I found in one cookbook was called exactly that—French croutons with rum. I was looking for this recipe because standard croutons didn't pair very well with shrimp, and I really wanted to serve croutons with shrimp for a holiday table. This recipe really saved the day—the French croutons turned out excellent, and now I almost always make them this way. Can be served warm or chilled.
Instructions

Step 1

Here, with these ingredients, we'll prepare our French toast.

Step 2

Mix the milk and eggs, whisk lightly with a fork.
- 3
Step 3

Add salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
- 4
Step 4

Finally, add the vanilla extract and rum.
- 5

Briefly dip each slice of baguette into the prepared liquid mixture.
- 7
Step 7

Just a few seconds—otherwise the baguette will get soggy and you won't be able to fry it.

Step 8

Toast the baguette slices in a dry skillet (if they start to burn badly, add a drop of oil) until crispy and golden on both sides. Done!
