Classic Forshmak
Description
This appetizer is equally good on a weekday and on a holiday. It can be served at the table spread on bread and garnished with greens, used to fill small tartlet cups, or served in a shared dish. Now you know—serve the appetizer at the table.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Here are all the ingredients we will need. If your apple is not tart, you will need wine vinegar. We will soak the bread pieces in water.
- 2
Step 2

Peel the apple and remove the core; peel the onion. Cut into wedges.
- 3
Step 3

Clean the herring. Remove the head and innards, peel off the skin, and remove as many bones as possible.
- 4
Step 4

Don't bother trying to remove the small bones when we run the herring through the meat grinder—the bones will either be ground up or wrap around the blade.
- 5
Step 5

Peel the boiled eggs and squeeze out the soaked bread pieces.
- 6
Step 6

And run all our ingredients through the meat grinder.
- 7
Step 7

Mix the resulting mixture. If your apple is not tart, now is the time to add vinegar to taste.
- 8
Step 8

Forshmak is ready!
