1. Prepare the dough. In a small bowl, mix milk with 2 tablespoons of warm water. Add yeast and stir gently. The mixture should foam slightly. Using an electric mixer, beat room-temperature butter, sugar, and salt until combined. Add the egg and beat. Alternately add flour and the milk mixture, beating the dough at medium speed until a smooth dough forms, for 7 to 10 minutes.

2. Place the dough in a baking pan. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and set in a warm place for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, until the dough doubles in volume.

3. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees. In a small bowl, whisk together corn syrup with 2 tablespoons of water and vanilla extract. Using an electric mixer, beat room-temperature butter, sugar, and salt for 5 to 7 minutes. Add the egg and beat. Alternately add the flour and mix until smooth.
