Buns from Childhood
Description
Homemade pastries for tea. The buns are traditionally shaped like eights, typical of school-style baking, but you can form them into round or elongated shapes if desired. Be sure to sprinkle the pastries with streusel—crumbly pastry topping—as it creates a delicious crispy crust. Knead the dough gently to avoid overworking it with flour, otherwise the buns won't turn out fluffy and light. For a more aromatic flavor, feel free to add cinnamon or citrus zest to the dough according to your taste. Serve with tea or coffee.

Step 1

1. In a bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, yeast, and flour. Stir and let sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes. Then add sugar, vegetable oil, salt, vanilla, and egg.

Step 2

2. Mix and add part of the sifted flour. Stir the dough with a spoon. Place the remaining flour on the work surface and knead a soft dough.

Step 3

3. Do not add extra flour; instead, grease your hands with vegetable oil and knead the soft dough. Grease the bowl with vegetable oil, place the dough inside, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.

Step 4

4. Knead the dough again and let it rest for another 30 minutes. Then knead the dough once more and divide it into 8 pieces on a work surface. Roll each piece into a long rope, join the ends together, and shape into a figure eight.
