Meat banitsa
Description
Delicious baked treat for the whole family. Among all traditional Bulgarian dishes, this one is my favorite because the taste of this pie is simply amazing—indescribable in words. There are actually several ways to prepare banitsa; the most common version is with cheese, but you can also find variations with pumpkin, cottage cheese, or herbs. Today, I'd like to offer you a particularly interesting recipe for meat-filled banitsa, to which we'll add a few extra ingredients. Making this pie isn't difficult at all, especially if you use ready-made dough. Admittedly, it's not available everywhere, but you can usually find it. After that, everything is very simple—you'll easily manage on your own. Preparing meat banitsa at home can be quick and easy. Serve it with tea or coffee.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

First, thoroughly rinse the mushrooms and chop them finely.
- 2
Step 2

Cut the onion into small cubes. Pour water into a saucepan and place over heat. When the water boils, add the finely chopped spinach and cook for just a couple of minutes.
- 3
Step 3

Then drain it in a colander.
- 4
Step 4

Pour a small amount of vegetable oil into a frying pan and place over medium heat. Add the onion to the pan and sauté for 1-2 minutes, then add the mushrooms and cook everything until the excess moisture has evaporated from the vegetables. Then season with salt and add spices: thyme, black pepper, savory, curry.
- 5
Step 5

Next, add the minced meat, fry for a couple of minutes, then add the spinach to the pan.
- 6
Step 6

When everything is almost ready, add a couple of tablespoons of red pepper and quickly stir to prevent burning.
- 7
Step 7

Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- 8
Step 8

Now we need to carefully remove one sheet of dough from the packaging. Place it on a table covered with plastic wrap, and put about three tablespoons of the prepared filling on one edge.
- 9
Step 9

Roll the dough into a roll. Do the same with the remaining dough.
- 10
Step 10

Grease the baking dish with vegetable oil and place the rolled dough in a spiral, covering the entire bottom of the dish.
- 11
Step 11

Next, we need to prepare the filling so that the dough doesn't burn. To do this, we crack an egg into a bowl, add half a cup of water and 20-30 ml of vegetable oil, then mix everything together. Pour this prepared mixture over our banitsa.
- 12
Step 12

Place the pan in a preheated oven at 180 degrees and bake the banitsa for about 20–25 minutes. After that, take the pan out of the oven and cover it with a towel, letting it cool down. Then cut the banitsa into pieces and enjoy its amazing taste.
