Banana puri

Description

The pastry is simple and quick to prepare. Puri is a South Asian bread, and in my case — sweet banana puri. It is usually served for breakfast or as a snack. In some parts of India, puri is also served with a mixed vegetable dish prepared during Pooja, as well as with kheer—a dessert made with rice, milk, and sugar. Puri is often the bread of choice for festivals and special occasions. Serve with tea or coffee.

Instructions

  1. 1

    Step 1

    Step 1

Prepare the ingredients, let's get started!

  2. 2

    Step 2

    Step 2

Mix whole grain flour with sugar, salt, baking soda, and caraway seeds.

  3. 3

    Step 3

    Step 3

Peel a ripe banana, break it into pieces, add two tablespoons of yogurt, and mash with a fork to make a puree.

  4. 4

    Step 4

    Step 4

Add banana puree and a couple of tablespoons of water to the flour mixture, and knead the dough.

  5. 5

    Step 5

    Step 5

The amount of flour may vary depending on the size of the banana and the thickness of the yogurt. Your dough should be firm but slightly sticky. Cover it with a towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.

  6. 6

    Step 6

    Step 6

Wet your hands with vegetable oil, divide the dough into pieces (or simply pinch off pieces of dough the size of a tennis ball).

  7. 7

    Step 7

    Step 7

Grease the table and rolling pin with vegetable oil, roll out the dough like for dumplings, slightly thicker if desired.

  8. 8

    Step 8

    Step 8

Heat the frying oil very well; puris won't puff up in cold oil. Carefully place the flatbreads into the hot oil and fry for just about a minute, turning them over. They will puff up instantly and cook very quickly!

    Step 9

    Step 9

Place the finished puri on a wire rack or paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve warm banana puri with coffee or tea. Enjoy!
