Austrian poppy seed rolls
Description
Delicious baked goods for the whole family. You can add nuts to the poppy seeds, chopped candied fruits, or dried fruits. Ready-made rolls can be dusted with powdered sugar after baking, or you can make a glaze using sour cream, cream, and lemon juice (there are other options as well). The dough can be kneaded using a bread machine or by hand. Allow enough time for the dough to rise, and your baked goods will turn out fluffy. The baking is done. Serve at the table.
Instructions

Step 1

1. Add 1/6 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of water to a saucepan, whisk the ingredients over medium heat until a thick, smooth paste forms, then remove from heat and let cool. Adding this mixture to the dough will make it soft and fluffy.

Step 2

2. For the dough: place the freshly prepared mixture from the saucepan into the bread machine pan, add milk, butter, sugar, salt, and egg, then pour in the flour. Make a small well in the center and add the dry yeast. Turn on the bread machine and select the "Basic Dough" setting.

Step 3

3. When the dough is ready (after 2-3 hours, depending on the model), place it on a floured surface and roll it out into a rectangle.
- 4
Step 4

4. Slightly melt the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter or take it out of the refrigerator in advance so that it becomes very soft. Spread the butter over the rectangle, leaving the edges uncovered.

Step 5

5. Place the sweet poppy seeds and spread them evenly over the entire layer.
- 6
Step 6

6. Roll the rectangle into a roll.
- 7
Step 7

7. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into 2 parts, then each part into 8 more pieces.
- 8
Step 8

8. Place 8 portions into a baking dish (I used a round one).
- 9
Step 9

9. Cover the pastry with plastic wrap and let it rest for 1 hour.
- 10
Step 10

10. Place the rolls in a preheated oven at 180 degrees for 17-20 minutes, until a golden crust forms.
- 11
Step 11

11. Transfer the rolls from the baking sheet to a plate and dust with powdered sugar, then let cool and serve.
