Australian meat pie
Description
The recipe will not take much time. These pies are best baked in small round tins, but large ones are used as well. Puff pastry is best bought ready-made, while shortcrust pastry is easy to make at home. Traditionally the pies are served with tomato or mint sauce alongside cream of green pea soup. They can also be served with tea or coffee.
Instructions
- 1
Step 1

Prepare all the ingredients you need to make Australian meat pies.
- 2
Step 2

Rinse the beef, pat dry, and cut into small pieces. Place in a bowl, season with salt, sprinkle with flour, and toss so each piece is coated.
- 3
Step 3

Pour vegetable oil into a skillet and heat over medium heat. Add the meat coated in flour and fry for 5 minutes, stirring.
- 4
Step 4

Peel and finely chop the onion and garlic. Add the vegetables and thyme, pour in the Worcestershire sauce, and pour in the water.
- 5
Step 5

Reduce the heat, cover with a lid, and simmer until done. Remove the lid and let the liquid cook off until you have a thick sauce. Take the skillet with the meat off the heat and let it cool.
- 6
Step 6

Grate cold butter on a coarse grater, add salt, sift in the flour and quickly rub together with your hands until crumbly.
- 7
Step 7

Pour ice-cold water into the flour mixture and quickly knead a soft, non-sticky dough.
- 8
Step 8

Roll out the dough into a thin sheet and line the molds with it, pressing it into the bottom and up the sides; trim off the excess. I used aluminum molds 8 by 12 centimeters; I got three of them.
- 9
Step 9

Spread the meat filling into the molds, filling them right to the top.
- 10
Step 10

Roll out the puff pastry slightly and cut out three lids. Place them on top of the pies and press the edges together firmly.
- 11
Step 11

Crack the egg into a bowl and whisk with a fork until smooth. Brush the tops of the pies with egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
- 12
Step 12

Place the Australian pies in a hot oven and bake at 180°C for 20–30 minutes until done. Remove the baked pies, let them cool slightly, and serve.
- 13
Step 13

Done. Serve at the table.
